The Worst Day To Fire Someone
Feb 20, 2025
There’s no way around it, firing people is just part of running a business. Maybe times are financially tighter than you expected them to be, maybe you have someone that’s refusing to get with the programme, or maybe you have someone ruining your company culture… Whatever the reason for it, sometimes you just need to let people go. It’s not nice, but it needs to be done. That said, there is a right way and a wrong way to go about these things. And it’s on us (managers and bosses) to ensure it’s handled as delicately as possible. One of the worst ‘mistakes’ I see people making when it comes to letting team members go, is firing them on a Friday. If you let someone go on a Friday, you are putting them in a horrible position. They’re going to be left panicked and stressed all weekend with very little they can do to start working through the situation they’re left in (now facing being unemployed). Please, whatever you do. Don’t fire people on a Friday. Best Boss In BritainIn the latest episode of Best Bosses in Britain, I shared the story of Joe, the Founder of the London-based charity, Kick. Joe is one of those very special and very rare bosses, who really goes the extra mile for his employees and I felt it absolutely necessary that we included him as one of our 5 best bosses. If you’re interested in watching the episode (and hearing more about Joe) you’ll find it live on all of my social channels now. And if you’re interested in finding out more about the work that he and the team at Kick do, then head over to their website, or give them a follow on social media (both linked below) Kick website: https://kick.org.uk/ Why managers need to invest in cultureSomehow, the idea of investing in your team and culture still gets a bad rep. Ther’s an old-fashioned notion that those things aren’t as important as other areas of your business and that investing in your culture is “woke” or “fluff”. But investing in company culture isn’t about buying bean bags and posting about how good a boss you are on LinkedIn. It’s about creating an environment where your team feel motivated and inspired to deliver their best work. |
