This week, someone asked me for my advice on the best way to manage disruptive and troublesome employees.
โ
They have someone who is an extremely hard worker, but who also has a tendency to upset other members of the team, and they wanted to know what to do about here.
โ
So here are my thoughts…
โ
First things first, if you have a disruptive employee who’s acting out and making life difficult for the rest of the team, you need to have a 1-on-1 with them.
โ
You need to make them aware of the situation and discuss anything that may be causing them to act the way they are.
โ
This chat is particularly important if the employee has been with you for a while and this behaviour is out of character. There’s no excuse for poor behaviour to other team members, but it might help if you know what’s going on in their lives.
โ
From there, I would consider a formal warning and put a plan in place (with the team member) to make sure this doesn’t keep happening.
โ
If (for whatever reason) the employee continues to act this way and make life difficult for the rest of the team, then you may need to make the tough decision to let them go from the business.
โ
It doesn’t matter how hard-working an employee is, you can’t afford to have one individual negatively impacting the rest of your team and your business.
Best Boss In Britain
In this week’s episode of Best Bosses In Britain, we caught up with Chloe, the Founder and Boss of Esoteric London, which is a boutique jewellery business based in London.
โ
Meeting Chloe was an absolute blast and looking over the nomination that we received from her employees, it was clear to us that she’s both a great boss and a great person who deserved to be put in the spotlight.
โ
You’ll find the full episode of Best Bosses In Britain (sharing Chloe’s story) on all of my social channels. And if you’re interested in finding out more about the work that Chloe and the team at Esoteric London do, then head over to their website, or give them a follow on social media (both linked below)

Experience is overvalued
Something I’ve been thinking about this week is how often companies value experience (as in the number of years someone has been doing something) over capability.
โ
Whilst the two are often related I think it’s important to realise that actual skill matters too.
