How to Spot Burnout Before It Hits You

newsletter articles Sep 26, 2025

Burnout doesn’t happen overnight. It creeps up slowly.

First you’re tired, then you’re drained, then suddenly even small tasks feel impossible.

The good news is that there are early warning signs. And if you catch them before burnout takes over, you can take steps to reset and recover.

Here are three things to look out for.

—----------------------------

Three Ways to Spot Burnout Early:

1. Your body is telling you something

Headaches, poor sleep, stomach issues, constant fatigue.
Your body often spots burnout before your mind does.

Ask:

  • Am I sleeping well?

  • Do I wake up rested?

  • Am I always tired, even after downtime?

If the answer is no, your body may be waving a red flag.

2. Small tasks feel like big mountains

Burnout makes simple things feel overwhelming.
Replying to an email, joining a call, finishing a report.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I procrastinating on basic tasks?

  • Do things I used to do easily now feel heavy?

If small work feels huge, your energy reserves are running low.

3. You feel detached from your work

One of the clearest signs of burnout is cynicism or detachment.
When you stop caring about things you used to enjoy, that’s a signal.

Ask:

  • Am I just going through the motions?

  • Do I feel disconnected from my team or results?

Cynicism is not laziness. It’s exhaustion in disguise.
