How to Actually Get Recognition at Work

Oct 03, 2025

We all want our work to be noticed. But too often, effort goes unseen while louder voices or bigger egos get the credit.

The good news is that recognition is not just luck. There are practical ways to make sure your contributions stand out without looking like a show-off.

Here are three ways to get the recognition you deserve.

Three Ways To Get Recognition at Work

1. Speak about results, not just effort

Hard work matters, but results matter more. Instead of telling your boss how many hours you put in, talk about the outcomes.

Try:

  • “The changes I made cut processing time by 20%.”

  • “That report helped the team land X client.”

Outcomes stick in people’s minds more than effort.

2. Share credit while highlighting your role

Recognition grows when you give it out. If you praise your team while making your contribution clear, you look collaborative, not self-serving.

Try something along the lines of: “The project went smoothly thanks to Sarah’s data, and I was able to build the client presentation from it.”

That way, you show appreciation for your teams efforts whilst making sure your part is visible.

3. Document your wins regularly

Don’t wait for annual reviews to remember what you achieved. Keep a simple list of results, feedback, and projects you delivered.

Then when opportunities for promotion or pay rises come up, you have evidence ready to go.
It is easier for managers to recognise what you can prove.
